About Goomp Goomp Books
Aboriginal languages have only a fraction of the books that English learners take for granted. Goomp Goomp Books is changing that, one levelled picture book at a time, so every learner of Yugambeh and Ugarapul has the next step waiting.
A child learning English is surrounded by books made for exactly where they are as a reader: board books, picture books, early readers and chapter books, on every shelf at home, at school and at the library.
Learners of Aboriginal languages have very little. Many languages have a word list or a handful of recordings, with almost nothing written for a child to pick up and enjoy. Without things to read, it is hard for a language to become part of everyday life.
Nobody learns a language from a single source. Learners need to meet words again and again, in many forms: spoken and sung, pictured and written, at home, at school and on Country. Books are one of the most important of those forms, and every Goomp Goomp book gives each word three ways to land.

Bright illustrations put every word in a scene a child already understands.
Yugambeh and English sit side by side, so readers and the adults reading with them can follow along.

Every title also appears in Gibamyeri, a script made for Yugambeh sounds and syllables.
New words stick best when they rest on words a learner already knows. Goomp Goomp Books are written in five reading levels, and each level builds on the words and patterns of the one before, so a learner never has to start again from scratch.
Each level is named for a stage in the life of a kangaroo, from Nyamul, the joey in the pouch, to Guruman, the old man kangaroo. Meet the five levels.
You can see the building in the titles themselves:
We make the books that were missing: written in language, built in steps, and full of ways in, for homes, classrooms, libraries and language programs.
Written by a Yugambeh speaker and accredited linguist, in Yugambeh and Ugarapul.
Five reading levels, each one building on the words and patterns of the last.
Pictures, words in two languages, and the Gibamyeri script in every book.
